I lost my Daddy to melanoma on January 13, 2001. His melanoma was more of a freckle than a mole so look closely and ALL unusual places. He lived about 6 months after he was diagnosed. It was in 3 places in his brain and two places on his lungs. He was 46 years old.

Great site, thanks. I am a recently discovered Stage 3a Melanoma, age 35, and completed a SNB of one positive lymph node and two negative near the mole site on my back. No traces on CT, PET or MRI scans.

I am now considering foregoing Interferon in favor of alt adjuvant treatment. Any good ideas out there? DTIC and IL-2 combination? MDX-010?

God is good at all times!

I know I already posted a message, but I wanted to add one thing- during my mother's illness, we were not that well informed of things- for example, long periods of steroid use(for edema)-dexamethasone can cause diabetes in a lot of cases. In my mother's case- she was almost in a diabetic coma about 2 points away), her sugar levels were so high. She needed 2 insulin pens daily, as a result, added on to a TON of other meds. Also, ask your doctor about anti seizure meds like dilantin, ahead of time. Furosemide was a useful water pill, and very important for fluid build up in the lungs. Oncologists should give you these bits of info. Never be afraid to research meds and ask doctors about them. Alot of crap can be prevented from the patient if you are willing to speak up. I'm glad I did.
Just some advice incase anyone is interested. Thank you. Good luck all. Ps- if anyone is going the chemo route, ask about temedol- it had positive results for my mom-and it is one of the very few that cross over to the brain. It is an oral pill in most cases. It made her weak, but not sick, and shrunk her tumours in half.

Melanoma just took my 58 year old mother- and best friend on aug 23 2007. It started as a mole in 2000, that was never followed up on properly-even though it was malignant. It went to her bowel, lungs, adrenal gland , and brain. she was given 6 months in Feb 2007, and after a hard battle, and horrible things in btw, the person I looked up to most in the whole world, who was full of so much life had so many friends , had her life cut too short. she was the bravest person I ever knew- thank you to whoever made this site possible and for helping others to realize melanoma does not end on your skin all the time. People need to make this nasty asshole cancer known.
Love you mom
ps- get your moles CHECKED
